2 EXCITING EVENTS DURING THE FINAL WEEK OF THE EXHIBITION
Artists and environmental activists discuss MOUNTAIN TOP REMOVAL, the most controversial coal mining practice.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 2, 2010 @ 5:30pm

DEEP DOWN

MOUNTAIN TOP REMOVAL feature documentary preview.
Meet Sally Rubin, the film's co-director & Terry Ratliff, one of the film's subjects.

To keep up with our world’s increasing demand for energy...
we are mining the earth for natural resources and putting communities worldwide at risk. The documentary film DEEP DOWN tells the story of the human impact of our voracious appetite for energy through the lens of a town deep in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky, where coal is king.

FILM SYNOPSIS
Beverly May and Terry Ratliff grew up like kin on opposite sides of a mountain ridge in eastern Kentucky. Now in their fifties, the two find themselves in the midst of a debate dividing their community and the world: who controls, consumes, and benefits from our planet’s shrinking supply of natural resources?

SUNDAY, JANUARY 3, 2010 @ 2pm

Meet LARRY GIBSON, one of the leaders in the fight against MOUNTAIN TOP REMOVAL.

Larry was honored by CNN when he was named a CNN Hero. He has also been featured in National Geographic Magazine, O Magazine, Vanity Fair, New York Times, and several recently released documentary films including, Coal Country, Burning the Future, Mountain Mourning, and Mountaintop Removal. A recently released book, Bringing Down the Mountain, tells us even more of Larry's important role in this fight. He works tirelessly to raise awareness about the destruction in Appalachia and to light a fire in our bellies to stop mountaintop removal. Larry continues to speak at countless universities and conferences, and he has hosted thousands of people to see Kayford Mountain over the past 20 years.

We will be tweeting live during both events. Join us HERE and participate!

ADMISSION TO BOTH EVENTS IS FREE

Generous support for Mountain Strip was provided by Black & White Project Space with public funds from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

Located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, Black & White Project Space is a non-profit art organization committed to production, presentation and promotion of innovative and audience-engaging site-specific installations otherwise in danger of under-representation.

As exhibition spaces and artists’ studios disappear due to the building boom that has replaced so much of the neighborhood's historic fabric, our mission is to preserve and further develop the creative environment by bringing socially conscious art to a wide audience and offering substantial resources to artists shaping contemporary visual culture in the field of site-specific installations.
