PROJECT
ABSTRACT
Mountain Strip will attempt to articulate
humankind’s desire to take command over the
earth alluding to conflicts with nature, politics
and ourselves. Reflecting on our precarious relationship
with our surroundings, the installation will combine
landscape
forms
historically used in different creative mediums and
carry them into the contemporary consciousness of
the conflicted landscape.
PROJECT CONCEPT
Mountain Strip is an important and timely
sculptural work -- a miniaturized landscape section
representing the land and its iconic meaning. Blane
De St. Croix will re-create a miniature landscape
of a United States coal mine -- a mountain strip mine,
simulating a devastating slice of the environment.
These mines have taken on more meaning and unintended
scrutiny as the nation and the world grapple with
the ecological, social and political implications
of such activities. To provide the viewers with a
sense of being at the bottom of the mountain, this
monumental miniature landscape sculpture will run
the entire length of the outdoor gallery space towering
above the exterior walls and dynamically cutting through
the interior glass doors spilling into the indoor
gallery The installation will exist as a permanent
three-dimensional still for us to observe as a subliminal
image and to experience as a moment between past and
future. In addition, numerous detailed and extensive
ink drawings in support of the project and its research
will be on view.

Located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, Black
& White Project Space is a non-profit art organization
committed to production, presentation and promotion
of innovative and audience-engaging site-specific
installations otherwise in danger of under-representation.
As exhibition spaces and artists’ studios disappear
due to the building boom that has replaced so much
of the neighborhood's historic fabric, our mission
is to preserve and further develop the creative environment
by bringing socially conscious art to a wide audience
and offering substantial resources to artists shaping
contemporary visual culture in the field of site-specific
installations.
